Keanu barada nikto! Robert Wise’s “The Day the Earth Stood Still” is a textbook example of Hollywood wrapping social consciousness in a thick blanket of science-fiction iconography (namely, the flying saucer and the robot) to make an otherwise unpleasant topic palatable to popcorn crunching, bubblegum-snapping audiences. The original is such a great film; I have high hopes that the remake treats the genre with similar respect.

In regards to the Global Warming Crisis, the ever-perspicacious Adrienne Papp asks the question: Are we powerless or just stupid?
I submit that most of the time we are powerfully stupid. Just as the film manifests the power of ultimate destruction or survival within the Klaatu character so too, do we put megalomaniacs, morons, and occasionally enlightened servants of the people in our global power seat. Interesting how the original film came out in 1951. Now 58 years later, we’re still trying to stop ourselves from self-destruction. I wish us luck.
